Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard accepts the “Championing Hispanic Success in Higher Education Award” from Dr. Antonio R. Flores, president and CEO of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities

Washington, Mar 26 -

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard accepts the “Championing Hispanic Success in Higher Education Award” for her advocacy on behalf of Hispanic-Serving Institutions from Dr. Antonio R. Flores, president and CEO of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU).  The congresswoman spoke to more than 100 college representatives from throughout the country at HACU’s annual Capitol Hill forum about the federal appropriations process in Congress.  During her remarks, the congresswoman praised the association’s members for “providing hope and opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds … and for embracing diversity and encouraging our Hispanic youth to apply, attend, and most importantly, graduate from college.” The congresswoman also urged the audience to help garner support on Capitol Hill for needed federal funding for Hispanic-Serving Institutions and the American Dream Act, which she authored to help undocumented students fulfill their dream of attending college and becoming American citizens. Established in December 1986, HACU is a national organization that represents more than 400 colleges and universities that collectively serve more than two-thirds of the nearly two million Hispanic students in higher education. The association represents Hispanic-Serving Institutions - including California State University-Los Angeles, East Los Angeles College and Cerritos Community College - where Hispanics constitute 25 percent or more of the total enrollment at either the graduate or undergraduate level or both.
