Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) meets with Downey Councilman Mario Guerra (District 2) to discuss plans for the construction and opening of the Columbia Memorial Space Science Learning Center in the summer of 2008 as well as the city’s needs for infrastructure improvements. While in our nation’s capital, the councilman also met with NASA and Smithsonian Air & Space officials regarding the learning center. The center will be located at the site of the former NASA space shuttle manufacturing facility in Downey where key components of its space shuttle fleet, including the Columbia, were built. The center will feature programs and exhibits about the history and future of space exploration in the community, region and country. The congresswoman was the lead sponsor of legislation approved by Congress in 2004 to name the learning center in honor of the seven Space Shuttle Columbia astronauts who lost their lives on February 1, 2003. Councilman Guerra was elected to the city council in November 2006.
