Washington, Mar 20, 2007 -

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) meets with Admiral Thad Allen, 23rd Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, to discuss a variety of important security-related issues, including the Central California Area Maritime Security Committee charged with improving area security measures and the Coast Guard's Integrated Deepwater System program to modernize its entire offshore fleet as needed over the next 25 years. The congresswoman, who sits on the Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee, represents a Los Angeles-based district with strong regional ties to the ports of Los Angeles-Long Beach, which make up the largest port complex in the U.S. and the third largest in the world. As a branch of the Armed Forces and a federal law enforcement agency within the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Coast Guard uniquely serves a vital role in protecting America's maritime safety and security while protecting and preserving the nation's oceans, ports and waterways. As the top official of the U.S. Coast Guard, Admiral Allen is responsible for leading more than 50,000 Coast Guard active duty and Reserves whose missions include search and rescue, homeland security and national defense, marine environmental protection, law enforcement, and maritime safety. On March 17, California-based Coast Guard cutters Sherman and Hamilton joined forces with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to make the largest maritime cocaine seizure in history, netting more than 42,000 pounds of cocaine from a ship off the coast of Panama.
