Washington, Mar 14, 2007 -

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) meets with the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters to discuss federal highway infrastructure improvements and the continued federal funding for the Edward R. Roybal Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension. The meeting in the congresswoman’s Washington office took place following an Appropriations Transportation Subcommittee hearing at which the congresswoman, who is a member, thanked the Secretary, who was testifying before the subcommittee, for including $80 million in continued federal funding for the $898 million project in the Administration’s proposed 2008 budget. The project will add six miles of rail and eight stations east - through Little Tokyo, the Arts District, Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles - to the regional Metro Rail system that crisscrosses Los Angeles County. The congresswoman worked with other key lawmakers to secure final approval of the Full Funding Grant Agreement that allowed construction of the project to get underway. In addition, during the hearing, the congresswoman thanked the Secretary for touring the port complex of Los Angeles-Long Beach in February to learn firsthand about the traffic congestion and other challenges facing the region. The congresswoman also questioned the Secretary about the pay and recruitment of air traffic controllers to ensure adequate staffing levels at our nation’s airports.
