Congresswoman Praises Obama Administration's Efforts to Curb Domestic Violence
New across-government initiative to address abuse against women announced today
Washington,
Oct 27, 2010 -
“October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about this epidemic and renew our commitment to ending it. As a nation, we must recognize the very real danger of domestic violence in our communities and acknowledge the importance that our national economy has on the incidents of violence in the home. As domestic violence advocates know all too well, the ongoing recession has had devastating effects on victims of domestic violence. Unemployment and financial hardship have exacerbated incidents of domestic violence and economic concerns have left victims with few places to turn. I applaud President Obama’s commitment to addressing and ending domestic violence. Throughout a coordinated, national effort, across the entire government, which the Obama Administration announced today, we can break this tragic cycle of abuse once and for all,” said Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34), a longtime advocate on behalf of victims of domestic violence and the author of the Security and Financial Empowerment Act – or SAFE Act introduced to ensure that domestic violence survivors have the financial security they need to leave an abusive situation. Among other things, the SAFE Act would allow a survivor to take time off from work, without penalty from their employer, to make necessary court appearances, seek legal assistance, and get help with safety planning.
