Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), who represents many of the communities around the former Exide Technologies facility in Vernon, as well as the site of the facility itself, issued the following statement today about Governor Jerry Brown’s signing of a $176.6 million spending plan to fund expedited and expanded testing and cleanup of communities around the former Exide facility:

“This spending bill marks an important step in our fight to clean up the communities around Exide.  I commend our state legislators, and our other leaders and advocates, for their work to move this funding legislation to the governor’s desk, and I thank Governor Brown for signing it into law.

“However, we will need much more money to fully fund the cleanup of all the properties impacted by Exide, and to pay for the programs and services families need as a result of the devastating impacts of Exide’s poisons.

“I remain committed to ending this environmental disaster, and to giving these families hope for a healthier future.

“I encourage everyone living, working, or attending school within three miles of Exide to get a free blood lead test by calling (844) 888-2290.  In addition, residents living within 1.7 miles of Exide should call (844) 225-3887 to schedule free soil testing and cleanup.”
