Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) praised the ACLU’s long and proud history of defending and protecting the civil liberties and civil rights of our nation’s families at a gathering of its board members and supporters at the home of Stanley and Elyse Grinstein.  During the discussion, the congresswoman provided an overview of the many important issues that she and other lawmakers have championed along with the ACLU.  The topics included congressional efforts to protect against warrantless wiretapping of phone calls and ineffective and potentially erroneous means of verifying a worker’s legal immigration status.  The congresswoman also outlined a measure she authored to protect immigrant detainees against abusive treatment. Ms. Theresa Karanik works as a mental health therapist for Homeboy Industries, which assists at-risk and formerly gang-involved youth to become positive and contributing members of society through job placement, training and education.
