Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard presents a Congressional Certificate of Recognition to Salesian Sister Josephine Ochoa, Principal of St. Mary School in Boyle Heights on the occasion of the parochial school’s 100 year anniversary celebration. A graduate of St. Mary’s Class of 1955, the congresswoman praised the faculty and student body for the school’s longstanding achievements. As part of the festivities, San Gabriel Region Auxiliary Bishop Gabino Zavala presided at a Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, followed by a reception attended by students and teachers, past and present, as well as friends and other community supporters. St. Mary School was the third parochial school established in Los Angeles. In 1907, the Sisters of the Holy Names opened the school with grades one through eight and a total enrollment of one hundred seventy-one students. Today, the school - located at 416 So. St. Louis Street – has more than 300 students enrolled.
