Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) welcomes Dr. Carmen A. Puliafito (pictured), the new Dean of the Keck School of Medicine of USC, to our nation’s capital. Dr. Puliafito, whose deanship began on November 1, is one of the world’s premier health management experts and a renowned Opthamology clinician and researcher. The dean met with the congresswoman to discuss his future vision for the medical school and ways in which the school can better serve the health care needs of the congresswoman’s constituents. Located on USC’s Health Sciences Campus in Boyle Heights in the 34th District, just east of Downtown Los Angeles, the Keck School of Medicine is home to the Doctors of USC - a nationally recognized program in which the school’s physicians practice in a multitude of clinical specialties. They practice in private clinics on the health science campus and also at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, USC University Hospital, USC/Norris Cancer Hospital, LAC+USC Medical Center, the Doheny Eye Institute and elsewhere around the greater Los Angeles area. In addition, Dr. Puliafito discussed the importance of adequately funding National Institutes of Health research programs. The health sciences campus is a major center for basic and clinical biomedical research, especially in the fields of cancer, gene therapy, the neurosciences, and transplantation biology. The health sciences campus is also home to several research institutes, including the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute, the Broad Center for Integrative Biology and Stem Cell Research, the Cardiovascular Thoracic Institute, the Institute for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research, and the Institute for Genetic Medicine.
