Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard meets with Arturo Vargas, Executive Director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), to discuss a number of important issues affecting the Latino community. Mr. Vargas updated the congresswoman on the organization’s citizenship drive which is credited with helping thousands of legal permanent residents to apply for U.S. citizenship. They also discussed anticipated problems with a proposed Department of Homeland Security rule that would require some permanent legal residents to renew their green cards. He also emphasized the need for public outreach should the proposed rule become law. In addition, Mr. Vargas advocated for full funding for the U.S. Census Bureau and the related program that carries out early outreach for the 2010 census. Mr. Vargas emphasized the importance of making sure the census accurately reflects the size of the Latino population to best ensure that Latinos are fully represented in Congress and federal funding decisions.
