Mayfair High School graduate Jean Lee has demonstrated excellence in artistry, not just once, but three times in a row. Jean, a resident of Bellflower, placed second in the “Artistic Discovery – 34th Congressional District Student Art Competition” sponsored by Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Jean recently collected her scholarships with the total prize adding up to $2,250 combined for the three wins.
The scholarships will immediately be put to good use. Jean plans to attend the University of California at Davis this fall where she will pursue a degree in Computer Engineering.
As the second place winner, Jean’s entries were displayed for one year in Congresswoman Roybal-Allard’s District Office in the Roybal Federal Building in Downtown, Los Angeles. Jean also received a gift certificate for art supplies and a cash award.
Every year, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard sponsors the competition which is open to students in grades 9-12 who reside in the 34th Congressional District. The district includes the communities of Bell, Bellflower, Bell Gardens, Boyle Heights, Commerce, Cudahy, Downey, Downtown Los Angeles, Huntington Park, Little Tokyo, Maywood, South Park, Vernon, Walnut Park, and portions of Chinatown, East Los Angeles, Florence, Pico Union, and Westlake.
The winning entry represents the 34th Congressional District for one year in a national exhibit at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. The winning student is awarded a $1,000 scholarship, gift certificate and cash prize and is flown to the nation’s capitol for the opening of the exhibit.
