Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard announced the winners of the 14th Annual 34th Congressional District Student Art Competition at an awards presentation and exhibit opening at the Pico House in historic Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles. This year 156 students representing 15 different high schools participated in the art competition. All entries were professionally framed and are currently featured in a month-long exhibit at the Pico House gallery. 2007 CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION WINNERS
(April 28, 2007) Downtown, Los Angeles - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard is pleased to announce the winners of the 2007 34th Congressional District Student Art Competition.
“This art competition showcases the extraordinary creative talents of the students of the 34th Congressional District,” Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard said. “I am so proud to represent a district filled with so many artistic students, caring parents, inspirational teachers, and devoted community and business leaders who lend their support each year to make the art competition a success.”
Each competition entry was judged on four criteria: originality, technical skill, artistic presentation and use of color and contrast.
The first place prize went to Anthony Castañeda of Bellflower, a senior at Mayfair High School, who also earned an honorable mention award in last year’s art competition. His water color, guoache, acrylic, and color pencil piece titled Ancestral Wind, will be exhibited at the U.S. Capitol for one year. Anthony received a four-day trip for two to Washington, D.C. for the June 28th national exhibit opening and $500 spending money. Anthony also won a $1,000 scholarship, a $200 gift certificate for art supplies, and $150 cash. In addition, a copy of his piece was printed on 3,000 posters representing the competition. His teacher, Mr. Dan Madison, also received a trip to Washington, D.C. and a $600 gift certificate for art supplies that will benefit Mayfair High School art students.
Three students also received Honorable Mention awards: Downey High School junior Brenda Calderon of Downey for her painting titled, To Decay Like the Day That He Loved; Vicky Eom of Downey, a senior at Warren High School for her black and white photograph titled Los Angeles; and Julian Mondragon of Bell Gardens, a senior at Bell Gardens High School, for his mixed media painting titled My Purgatory Mother. Each of them won a $300 scholarship, a $100 gift certificate for art supplies, and $100 cash. A $200 gift certificate for art supplies was also awarded to the students’ schools. All of the honorable mention artwork will be displayed in Congresswoman Roybal-Allard’s District Office for one year. In addition to the finalists’ prizes, each school that submitted five or more entries will receive a $100 gift certificate for art supplies.
All 156 entries submitted for the 14th Annual Student Art Competition are currently on display at the Pico House Gallery at the historical Olvera Street site until June 3rd. El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, also known as Olvera Street, is located near downtown Los Angeles between Main and Los Angeles streets and the 101 Freeway and Cesar Chavez Avenue. Entrance is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
