Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) discusses her work in Congress with Alejandro Torres, an eighth grade student at Hollenbeck Middle School in Boyle Heights, who visited our nation’s capital for the first time as a participant in the People to People World Leadership Forum. President Dwight Eisenhower established the People to People Ambassador Programs, which include the world leadership forum, in 1956 as a way of bringing together ordinary people from different states and countries to help solve differences through greater cultural understanding. As a representative of his school and community, Alejandro was among 950 students from throughout the country as well as South Africa and Canada to travel to Washington, D.C. during the week of April 16-April 22 to learn about the inner-workings of our nation’s federal government. After learning of Alejandro’s interest in art, the congresswoman encouraged him to participate next year in her Congressional Student Art Competition. The competition is open to students in grades 9-12 who live in the 34th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Bell, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Boyle Heights, Commerce, Cudahy, Downey, Downtown Los Angeles, Huntington Park, Little Tokyo, Maywood, South Park, Vernon, Walnut Park and portions of Chinatown, East Los Angeles, Florence, Pico Union, and Westlake. More information about the art competition is available by contacting the congresswoman’s district office at (213) 628-9230.
