Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA–34) (shown on right) congratulated 102-year-old Boyle Heights resident Ramona Garcia-Coronado (shown center) on acquiring legal permanent residency in January with the assistance of the congresswoman’s caseworkers. Ms. Garcia-Coronado was among more than 125 residents who attended the congresswoman’s community meet-and-greet event held at the Bell Community Center. A member of Abuelitos de Boyle Heights, Ms. Garcia-Coronado was accompanied by Conny Gomez, president and founder of the non-profit organization that offers a wide-variety of free community services to assist seniors and other residents in obtaining their citizenship and acquiring needed reading, internet and computer skills. Ms. Gomez, who assisted Ms. Garcia-Coronado in gathering the necessary documents for her immigration application, said the letters of support written by many community residents and organizations were critical in helping Ms. Garcia-Coronado receive her legal permanent residency. Ms. Garcia-Coronado has been a resident of Boyle Heights for more than 40 years. As for Ms. Garcia-Coronado's vitality, Ms. Gomez said she credits her long life to strong religious convictions, a healthy diet and a deep love for the community.
