After being officially elected as our nation’s first female speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA-8) (shown far left) congratulates Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard on beginning her eighth two-year term in Congress representing the 34th Congressional District of Los Angeles. Congresswoman Roybal-Allard’s husband, Mr. Edward T. Allard III, holds the Bible as the congresswoman re-enacts part of her swearing-in ceremony held earlier in the day when she pledged to “… support and defend the Constitution of the United States…” and “…faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.” The congresswoman’s district comprises metropolitan downtown Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, Little Tokyo, Pico Union, and portions of Chinatown, Filipinotown, Koreatown, and Westlake. The suburban portions of the district include the cities of Bell, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Maywood, Downey, Bellflower, and Vernon and the unincorporated areas of East Los Angeles, Walnut Park and Florence. Pictured on the far right is Congresswoman Roybal-Allard’s son, Ricardo Olivarez.
