Skid Row Housing Trust Executive Director Mike Alvidrez presents Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) with the "Friend of the Homeless" Award at the grand opening of its Rainbow Apartments affordable housing complex in downtown Los Angeles. Mr. Alvidrez thanked the congresswoman for her dedicated leadership to end homelessness. The congresswoman successfully worked this year to bring together Los Angeles city and county representatives to discuss a regional approach to addressing homelessness. She is also a longtime advocate on behalf of increased federal funding for homeless assistance grants and affordable housing. Operated by the Trust, the 87-unit permanent Rainbow Apartments supportive housing development provides on-site services to assist chronically homeless individuals struggling with mental illness and other problems. Skid Row Housing Trust was founded in 1989 to preserve and construct safe and affordable low-income housing for Skid Row residents. The Trust operates more than 1,200 units in 20 residential buildings in downtown. The facilities provide residents training in computers, job search assistance, workshops on topics related to societal reintegration and healthcare, and community and recreation activities.
