Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) thanks Mr. Thaddeus Phillips (pictured in first photo), the City of Downey's Director of Community Services, for hosting the congresswoman's annual service academy workshop at the Downey City Library and for leading her on a library tour. At the workshop, representatives from our nation's U.S. service academies talked to students interested in attending the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Pictured in the center photo, the congresswoman greets student Caleb Shifflet, a Downey High School senior, as his proud great aunt, Ms. Joyce Pitts, looks on. Caleb is interested in attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Pictured in the third group photo from left to right: Mr. Ken Fidyk, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; Lt. Following a highly competitive admissions process, academy students receive a free college education in return for serving at least five years in the military after graduation. For more information about the application process, please call the congresswoman's Los Angeles office at (213) 628-9230 or click "Making College Affordable" on her homepage and then "How to Get a Free, Four-Year College Education."
