Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) thanked local cancer advocates from her district for traveling to our nation's capital to garner support for a legislative agenda to improve the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer. During the meeting, the congresswoman signed the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network's "Congressional Cancer Promise." The Promise asks members of Congress to support increased funding for cancer research at the National Cancer Institute and for the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. The program provides breast and cervical cancer screenings and treatment to low-income, uninsured women. The Congressional Cancer Promise also seeks support for Patient Navigators, a health service that helps patients navigate the health care system to find quality cancer screening, treatment and care in their area. In addition, the Promise legislative agenda seeks to make cancer screenings more accessible to Medicare beneficiaries and would also eliminate their co-pays for breast and colorectal screenings. Nearly three quarters of all cancer deaths occur in the 65 and over population.
