The National Network to End Domestic Violence presented Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard with a Certificate of Appreciation for her efforts to end violence against women. During the congresswoman's remarks at a breakfast reception held to kick-off a day of lobbying for full funding for programs included in the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), the congresswoman urged the organization's members to lobby on behalf of a measure she authored called the Security and Financial Empowerment Act - or SAFE Act. The measure makes it possible for victims to take unpaid leave to attend to matters related to their abuse such as legal proceedings, medical care, or finding a safe place to live without jeopardizing their employment. It also provides unemployment insurance for victims who are forced to leave their jobs as a result of their abuse. The congresswoman was successful last year in getting a SAFE provision included in the VAWA Reauthorization. The provision creates a National Resource Center on Workplace Responses to domestic violence. The Resource Center will help businesses develop and implement policies, guidelines, and plans to make their workplaces safer and more productive while supporting survivors of domestic violence.
