Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard joined hundreds of residents at the Huntington Park Police Department’s National Night Out event to promote the city’s community-police partnership to prevent crime and drug use.  Pictured in the photo from left to right: Congresswoman Roybal-Allard and Police Chief Paul Wadley of the Huntington Park Police Department.

For the 12th year, the Huntington Park Police Department has been a local co-sponsor of America’s National Night Out Against Crime, a national campaign which started in 1983 to encourage neighborhood camaraderie to reduce crime.

During her remarks, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard said, “I urge you, the residents of Huntington Park, to do your part by continuing to partner with your police department, firefighters and first responders throughout the year.”

The Huntington Park gathering was held at the Robert H. Keller Memorial Park where residents observed equipment and safety demonstrations by police officers, listened to live music, and visited booths from several local businesses and community organizations.

Congresswoman Roybal-Allard also told the audience that she and her congressional colleagues are continuing to champion crime-fighting initiatives for communities across America, noting that this year Congress is working to pass a Fiscal Year 2010 Commerce Justice Science appropriations bill to increase funding for the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program by $251.5 million over last year.  This funding will go toward assisting state and local law enforcement agencies through grants, training, and technical assistance to prevent and combat crime.

Congresswoman Roybal-Allard concluded her comments by thanking the Huntington Park Police Department for organizing the event and the many residents who participated for making the event a success.
