Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) meets with representatives of the Salvadoran-American Leadership Summit, including Los Angeles members, to discuss their shared concerns about the need for comprehensive immigration reform.

The delegation included the executive director of El Rescate, a non-profit organization located in the Pico Union area of the 34th District which serves immigrant families.  Founded in 1981, El Rescate (translated “The Rescue” in English) was the first organization founded in the United States to provide free legal and social services to refugees fleeing the war in El Salvador during the 1980s. Today, in addition to providing these and other critical services to immigrant families, the organization promotes the broader goal of economic empowerment through the creation of credit unions to help immigrant families achieve financial stability in this country.

Nearly 100 members of leading organizations of Salvadoran-Americans traveled to our nation’s capital to participate in the National Salvadoran-American Advocacy Day for Comprehensive Immigration Reform 2009.
