Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) presents a House Resolution she introduced commemorating historic milestones in Mexico’s history to Mexico’s Consul General in Los Angeles Juan Marcos Gutiérrez Gonzalez at a Mexican Independence day program in Boyle Heights.  The annual community gathering commemorates the September 16, 1810 start of the Mexican uprising against Spain in the City of Dolores Hidalgo in the State of Guanajuato, Mexico. The event was organized by El Comité Mexicano Cívico Patriótico, which was established in 1931 by a group of prominent businessmen to preserve important dates in Mexican history.

The congresswoman made the following remarks:

“It is with admiration that I commend President Sergio Tinoco and everyone at the Comite Mexicano Civico Patriotico for their continuous leadership in ensuring the beautiful Mexican culture and traditions are showcased and celebrated each year.

As we celebrate the bicentennial of Mexico’s independence it is also noteworthy that Mexico is also celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the Mexican Revolution.

In recognition of these historic events, it was a privilege as the first Mexican American woman elected to the U.S. Congress, to have introduced on July 30th, for consideration House Resolution 1604 commemorating these special milestones in Mexico’s history.

House Resolution 1604 states that the “United States House of Representatives joins the people of Mexico in celebrating the bicentennial anniversary of Mexican independence and the centennial anniversary of the beginning of the Mexican Revolution and recognizes the contributions Mexican-Americans have made to life in the United States and, that it looks forward to stronger ties and closer collaboration between our two countries.”

It is in this spirit of friendship and celebration of the independence of Mexico that I present a copy of House Resolution 1604 to Consul General Juan Marcos Gutierrez Gonzalez. QUE VIVA MEXICO! Y QUE VIVAN LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS! Gracias!

Gracias!
