Today, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard released the following statement on voting for the Bipartisan Student Loan Certainty Act of 2013 to fix student loan interest rates:

Unfortunately the ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬Bipartisan Student Loan Certainty Act of 2013 did not support the future students of our nation. However, I voted for the less than ideal student loan compromise bill because it prevented the doubling of interest rates for today’s students. Without this bill passing, 11 million undergraduate borrowers would have had to pay an average of $1500 in interest over the life of their loan.

With the passage of this bill, students and their families can breathe a sigh of relief knowing their interest rates are locked in for the upcoming academic year. This bipartisan compromise is only a first step toward an affordable college education. Now we need to turn our attention to addressing the bigger issue of skyrocketing college costs. I will continue to fight to find solutions that ensure all our nation’s students can afford a college education.
