Rep. Roybal-Allard Co-Authors Letter from 200+ House Members in Support of Catfish Repeal
Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40) issued the following statement about today’s presentation to House leadership of a letter she co-authored from 206 House members in support of bringing up S.J. Res. 28 – a bipartisan joint resolution of disapproval under the procedures of the Congressional Review Act to end the duplicative and wasteful USDA catfish inspection program – for a vote by the full House:
“I am committed to ensuring that our government is efficient and effective. That is why I am helping to lead the fight in Congress to eliminate the USDA’s wasteful catfish inspection program. This program has no place in our government and only serves to add to our national debt. It fragments our food safety system by making catfish the only type of fish under USDA inspection; the FDA should be inspecting catfish, just as it inspects all other fish. And it burdens businesses handling seafood by forcing them to operate under both USDA and FDA regulations. I hope that House leaders will schedule S.J. Res 28 for rapid consideration, as more than 200 members of Congress are now demanding.” The letter was previously presented to House leadership in June, with the signatures of 169 members. 37 new names have been added since then, bringing the current total to 206. Members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee have also sent a letter to House leadership in support of bringing S.J. Res 28 to a vote on the House floor. Between the two letters, 220 House members have signed their names in support of bringing this resolution to the floor and eliminating the USDA’s catfish inspection program.
