Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), the Ranking Democrat on the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee and an original co-author of the Dream Act, issued the following statement today regarding the White House’s immigration framework:

“Donald Trump proposes to ransom the futures of Dreamers and is demanding a set of hard-line immigration policies in return.  He has not offered a serious immigration proposal.  He has only offered an affront to common sense and decency.

“If Trump offers a reasonable compromise on immigration, I will listen.  But he wants to spend tens of billions on a wall, gut our family migration system, end diversity visas, and trash our asylum laws.  That is not a compromise.

“In the midst of this awful Trump proposal, our mission remains clear.  We must protect Dreamers, and do so without violating our core values.  Our bipartisan, bicameral Dream Act shows we can reach a solution that satisfies both Democrats and Republicans.”
