Rep. Roybal-Allard Statement on Balanced Budget Amendment Vote
Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), a member of the Joint Select Committee on Budget and Appropriations Process Reform and the Ranking Democrat on the House Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement about her vote today against H.J.Res. 2, which proposes a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution:
“Today, House Republicans tried to get some cover for their deficit-exploding tax scam by voting on a so-called balanced budget constitutional amendment. This terrible amendment isn’t a solution to our deficits and debt – it’s a fig leaf. It’s a way for the GOP to cover up their massive fiscal irresponsibility and appeal to their far-right base.
“I opposed this dangerous amendment because it would have a dire impact on our nation’s economy and families. It would impose cuts on vital programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security – just to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations.
“We must fix our broken budget, but we need to do so with common-sense, bipartisan solutions. As a member of the Joint Select Committee on Budget and Appropriations Process Reform, I am working with House and Senate colleagues of both parties to develop sensible proposals that will get our budget process back on track.”
